Best Drones for Kids 2021

The best drone for kids isn’t merely the one that’s the cheapest (but the price is an important consideration!). We’ve put together a guide to help you select the ideal drone for you and your family, whether your child is a budding photographer or videographer who wants to create some beautiful aerial footage, or whether they simply want the adrenaline rush of racing their drone.

Safety features and age-appropriateness are two of the most crucial considerations when selecting the finest drones for kids. While you may want to save money, you may find that the improved functionality and quality of more expensive gadgets are more appealing.

Indeed, you may discover that drones for kids are sometimes more difficult to fly, with low battery life and a lack of pilot-assist functions being standard in many machines. However, we scoured the internet for the greatest child-appropriate products available — even at lower price points.

It’s worth mentioning that many toy drones are constructed on the same ‘drone-on-a-chip’ platforms that wholesalers buy and then superficially brand. While this does not guarantee a negative experience with these items, it does demonstrate that many drones for kids come from a different universe than prosumer drones.

With all of that in mind, we’ve compiled a list of the best drones for kids that are currently available — with a focus on various age groups and budgets.

This compact and strong drone is not very unusual (though it is available in some attractive shell tones), but it is capable of hovering without the operator’s assistance and flying in the pilot-friendly ‘headless mode’ owing to an in-built pressure sensor.

In practice, this means that the drone can be moved around a room with a single control stick, making it easier than most video games! If you do crash, there are robust prop guards to protect you.

On the negative side, the attempt to protect the battery with a flap is neat but fiddly, and (as is always the case with tiny drones), don’t be fooled by the claims of 16 minutes of flight time – this is simply doubling the (optimistic) eight-minute time for one battery because there are two in the box! That is, however, a reasonable price for reasonable flight duration.

2. Holyton HT02 Mini Drone

This Holyton HT02 tiny drone is a quadcopter with altitude hold and three distinct speed modes if you’re looking for a low-cost choice. This drone is meant to be as user-friendly as possible, with protection guards, a headless mode, and the ability to do an ‘Emergency Stop’ to assist pilots of all abilities to have fun flying it.

The Holyton HT02 drone includes three batteries that should provide users with up to 24 minutes of flight time. Furthermore, its lightweight and tiny design mean that not only do you not need to register the drone with aviation authorities, but it is also quite easy to transport.

This low-cost drone includes a controller, four extra propellers, two guards, two USB chargers, and three drone batteries. This will provide your children with everything they need to enjoy racing their drones. While the Holyton HT02 drone lacks a camera (which we wouldn’t expect at this price), you really can’t go wrong with the price!

This drone features the practically expected 3D flips and headless mode, but thanks to the inclusion of five sensors (front/back/left/right/bottom), it can also be guided by waving a hand near the hovering drone; it will quickly back off. This also has an obvious safety advantage, though it should be noted that the propellor guards are superior to those found on many of the other drones on this list.

Other features that make this an appealing choice include the circle mode (the drone will make small circles), three-speed modes, and the design of the batteries, which are much easier to insert and remove without putting strain on delicate cables or lithium batteries cells than some other compact drones.

One of the recurring issues with integrating cameras for first-person (FPV) control is the provision of a screen. Connecting a phone to control a drone necessitates adjusting the wi-fi settings each time the drone is powered on.

It’s aggravating enough with your own drone but handing over your phone (and passcode) to the kids every time they fly can make you want to rip your hair out! What is the obvious solution? Incorporate a display inside the controller.

That is exactly the intention here – and with a range of roughly 50m, the drone is light enough to be durable, albeit it is not suitable for younger children due to the primitive prop guard.

The H107D+ is an update of the popular (and less expensive) H107D, with headless mode, headlights, and a 720P camera.

5. RED5 Motion Controlled Drone

Unbelievably simple to use, it’s easy to see why (maybe somewhat optimistically) the packaging thinks an 18-month-old could fly it. Supervision is essential, as it is with many of the drones at this price level.

The actual flight is incredibly simple – simply hold the controller between your fingers and the drone responds to your movements, maintaining height with its altitude lock. However, intervention is required to connect the device to the USB charger via cumbersome connectors, so your children may require a few more months of life experience. It is unquestionably best used indoors, and the propellor guards are of high quality.

The lightweight prop guard is another source of worry. Sure, it provides a few extra seconds of flight time than comparable goods, but at the expense of making the sensitive props easier to access for young fingers. They are also prone to failure, thus practice in larger venues is advised (and avoid using expansive hand movements when speaking!).

6. Ryze Tello

Does not include all of the coding features found in the Ryze Tello EDU.

The Tello shares a lot of technology with Ryze’s parent company, DJI, which is wonderful news in terms of quality and intelligence.

The camera is embedded into the body and can capture five-megapixel stills or 720P video — this is the highest resolution available in the toy market.

In addition to the traditional Tello, keep an eye out for an Iron-Man-branded Tello and an Edu(cational) taste (see below).

Naturally, there are plenty of flips and tricks to wow your pals, as well as “EZ” video clips, but where it really shines is in instructional value. This includes support for Scratch, a block-based visual programming system that allows computer enthusiasts to learn programming on a phone or tablet in the most enjoyable way imaginable. Because of its coding capabilities, the Ryze is a popular choice among STEM educators.

While the robust airframe hasn’t been updated since 2018, there have been several software changes to keep the app up to date. Other companies have created replacements, which are available through phone app stores and include features such as panoramic photography and FPV flight.

7. Ryze Tello EDU

Ryze Tech Tello - Mini Drone Quadcopter UAV for Kids Beginners

This is the greatest drone if you want to learn to code while flying with your quadcopter. This model has the same features as the Ryze Tello and the Ryze Tello Iron Man, but it can be programmed in multiple languages. The original Ryze Tello allows you to program in Scratch and DroneBlocks, but the EDU edition also allows you to use Python and Swift programming languages, which is ideal for aspiring developers. You can even configure Tello EDUs to move in a swarm and perform synchronized aerobatic shows if you know others who have the same drone. Another advantage of the EDU is that it comes with Mission Pads, which are patterned cards that can be programmed to recognize with the drone’s inbuilt camera and then conduct a preprogrammed maneuver.

8. DJI Mavic Mini

OK, strictly speaking, the DJI Mavic Mini isn’t a “toy,” though some people who don’t grasp the rules believe the phrases “lightweight” and “toy” are interchangeable.

This was DJI’s first attempt at a sub-250g drone (the weight which is a cut-off for registration in the USA & China, and a tier in the EU and UK). To be honest, it’s a fantastic job. This drone has the same basic components and flying duration as more expensive pro drones for older kids with smartphones (or grown-ups who haven’t quite grown up). It can also capture 2.7K video and 4000 x 3000 pixel JPEGs on a MicroSD card, and the results are miles ahead of other toys because the lens is stabilized.

If you purchase this, you are purchasing a genuine flying camera as a serious gift; it can even film automated flights for orbiting video selfies, so you may be boosting the recipient’s social media as well. You can also customize it with a variety of added features. In fact, there is just one better drone on this list, and they are related…

9. DJI Mini 2

The Mavic Mini is an excellent pick for older children who want to learn about drones and photography, and it is even more enticing option right now if you can locate it on sale. The DJI Mini 2 – which will be released in November 2020 – is identical or better in every way; DJI has enhanced the original drone with 4K footage, automated panoramas, and raw mode?

Who is it intended for? To be honest, this might be useful for some serious users. If you’re buying for someone who enjoys still photography or has a platform to show off 4K video, the added features on this computer seem too good to pass up. Flying will remain as simple as possible, thanks to automatic return-to-home and indoor visual positioning. If you’re looking for a gift for someone who has to have the latest and greatest, look no further.

This drone is also well-equipped in terms of interior and outdoor attachments, so whether you’re looking for something to write your own design on, hover a message to someone, or even turn it into a toy, this is the drone for you.
